WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AND ENERGY PROCESSES

[Image] Dale WittmerWelcome to the Department o f Mechanical Engineering and Energy Processes at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. The department was formed in 1970 and was called the Department of Thermal and Environmental Engineering. In 1971, the program was accredited by ECPD (ABET) as a Mechanical Engineering program. The name of the department was changed in 1984 to the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Processes. There were 15 faculty members at that time. That number has now grown to 18 faculty members, including the Chair, the Director of The Center for Advanced Friction Studies, and the Associate Director of the Coal Research Center and one instructor in this department. The department offers Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering and participates in the College-wide Doctoral program in Engineering Science. With more than 250 undergraduate students, we are the largest department in the College of Engineering. We currently have 40 graduate students in the program.
The department has multiple faculty members from different backgrounds such as mechanical engineering and materials and chemical engineering. Our distinguished faculty makes us one of the most diverse departments in the state. The students may take technical elective courses in the thrust areas of mechanical systems, thermal science, energy and chemical processes and mechanical engineering. Please feel free to explore our website for more information about the department.
